Why light an Aakashabutti / Deepa?

An excerpt from our epics
Hindutva is a way of life. Every ritual performed has a reason behind it. Adorning our houses with an Aakashabutti & Deepa during Deepavali/Diwali and the month ensuing it (Karthika Maasa) is a traditional way of observing the festival. We give you an opportunity to decorate your house with meaning, pride and authenticity. There are two theories around the importance of Aakashabutti/Kandil and Deepa/Diya. The purpose of writing this content is to highlight and inform you of the importance of this special occasion and not to form or force any opinions. The following passages state the theories without judgement of any sort. 1st theory The Karthika Maasa Shukla Paksha Pratipada is the third day of the Deepavali/Diwali festival. According to Bahagavatha puraana, Bali Chakravarthi, one of the greatest devotees of Mahavishnu and a great king, residing in the Sutala loka, visits the Bhooloka (Earth) every year on this day. He is accompanied by the Paramatma Mahavishnu himself. The King visits his Praje (citizens) to check on their welfare and prosperity. Decorating the houses beautifully with Flowers, Deepa/Diya and the Aakashabutti/Kandil is a gesture of welcome to the king and in turn Srihari. 2nd theory Yamadharmaraaya and our Pitrudevatha (representing ancestors) travel to Bhooloka (Earth) during Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha and proceed to return to their loka around Karthika Maasa (the month following the festival). Aakashabutti/Kandil (also called Yamadeepa) is hung in the South Eastern part of the house to provide them light during their journey back to their world. According to the Skandapuraana, dedicating the Aakashabutti/Kandil and Deepa/Diya to them, protects us from untimely deaths

About Us

Suvya | ಸುವ್ಯ is a dedication to our mothers whom we lost in the last year. We were on a quest to find artifacts and toys that appropriately depicted/represented our culture. Several visits to the market and exhibitions went in vain. The next best option was to create it ourselves. Aakashabutti / Kandil was one such trial. For more than 6 years, we made it at home. This beautiful piece decorated our Deepavali celebrations and brought us joy. Friends and relatives appreciated our efforts and some of them requested us to make one for them. We desire to grow with the journey we began and expand our creations from the Aakashabutti to many other articles which may help us reconnect with our rich culture. Our endeavor is to enrich the next generation and keep them curious and engaged with their roots.
